There are NO chemicals, NO preservatives, food safe along with high environmental standards. Why the higher price? In order to be compliant, the wood is dried in a "natural Kiln", stained with a special finish by hand and all the pieces are solid wood. Our normal backs and drawer bottoms are cabinet grade plywood made here in the USA. They don't use a carbon neutral "resin" to bond the plywood, so we had to build those pieces from solid wood. The extra lumber cost, labor and finish costs reflect the up charge in price.
